Project feasibility assessment with virtual measurements
Why would someone invest in developing a wind project before knowing whether the wind resources in the project area are favorable? Believe it or not, many developers still operate this way today. Our experience suggests that about half of cancelled projects are a result of insufficient wind resources.
So, instead of defining a park area, hiring a wind energy consultant to recommend a measurement campaign, then waiting a year or more for enough measurement data to determine the wind conditions of the park, why not let us help define a park area with favorable wind conditions before investing the time and money developing the project?
Finding suitable sites for project development beforehand not only reduces the risk of working on the wrong projects, but also reduces development time by eliminating efforts spent on lower quality projects.
We achieve this by using extracted “virtual wind measurements” from detailed meteorological models as input for a high resolution CFD flow model of the site. While the uncertainty of “virtual measurements” is generally slightly higher than good physical measurements, you get the results instantly, you get measurements for your entire park area, and it’s cheaper than measuring.
Wind data analysis
As wind measurements provides the basis for all wind resource assessment and production estimates, ensuring their quality early is important for accurate project assessment and risk reduction.
Whether you acquire your measurements using our services or through another vendor, we offer a wide range of analysis services to ensure your data and data coverage is sufficient for accurate
production estimation. Using MEASNET and IEC standards as a basis, we assess the coverage and uncertainty of the measured data with respect to park area, as well as give an assessment of the extreme wind, turbulence, wind shear, and long term wind speeds at the measurement mast location(s).
Wind resource analysis
Using the latest tools and knowledge to model the wind flow in complex and forested terrain, we assess the wind resources of a park area and present the results in a wind resource map provided in any desired format.
We have use an extensive suite of software for flow modeling, including WindSim, OpenFOAM and WAsP Engineering.
In addition to assessing wind resources, we also assess the site compliance with IEC turbine design criteria and other constraints, including terrain and flow inclination, turbulence intensity, wind shear, and extreme wind.
This assessment is important, both for ensuring the proper turbine class and type are selected for the site, as well as identifying suitable placement areas for each respective turbine.
